Sécale cereale'Prolific' was pollinated byTriticum aestivum'Chinese Spring" and the wheat genome was introduced into the rye cytoplasm by back crossing. Wheat plants with rye cytoplasm, 2n = 42, were completely male sterile, partly female sterile and showed reduced vigour. The addition of a rye chromosome or pair of chromosomes restored male fertility and vigour.
