Male ticks, Argasids as well as Ixodids, were observed to secrete saliva during copulation. The function of the saliva is to ensure a smooth transfer of the spermatophore from the male genital aperture to that of the female and to prevent adherence of the spermatophore to the male mouth parts, with which the male holds the spermatophore during the transfer. The quantity and duration of salivary secretion during copulation ofOrnithodoros savignyiwere measured. The histochemical reactions were tested and the chemical composition analysed.
