Progesterone synthesis in the bovine corpus luteum (CL) is stimulated by luteinizing hormone (LH) in vivo (Simmons and Hansel, 1964; Donaldson et al., 1965; Brunner et at., 1969; Carlson et al., 1971) and in vitro (Mason et al., 1962; Mason and Savard, 1964; Seifart and Hansel, 1965;Armstrong and Black, 1966). The binding of LH to specific luteal cell membrane receptors activates adenyl cyclase, which converts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to adenosine 3’5’ monophosphate (cyclic AMP). Cyclic AMP may mediate steroidogenesis through the activation of protein kinases that have the ability to phosphorylate other proteins. Protein phosphorylation is thought to initiate structural and/or functional alterations in chromosomal proteins or ribosomes which may affect transcriptional and/or translational control of protein synthesis (Langan, 1970). Prostaglandin (PG’s) stimulate adenyl cyclase activity and progesterone synthesis in the bovine CL in vitro (Marsh, 1970; Speroff and Ramwell, 1970) and endogenous PGE2 may mediate the stimulatory effect of LH on adenyl cyclase and steroidogenesis (Kuehl et al., 1970). Adenyl cyclase is stimulated by catecholamines in a wide variety of tissues, and a diversity of adrenergic responses are mediated by increased intracellular cyclic AMP (Reviewed by Robison et al., 1971). Catecholamines increase the levels of cyclic AMP by acting at receptor sites referred to as beta (j3) adrenergic receptors. Marsh (1970) reported a slight, but significant stimulation of adenyl cyclase activity in bovine CL homogenates
