Bergstrom’s (1986) reinterpretation of Opabinia and Anomalocaris is criticised by Briggs & Whittington (1987, this issue). My disagreement was largely based on the fact that there are several observations made on the fossils which were deliberately omitted by the authors. Their only excuse for this unusual approach is that they ‘considered it prudent to omit them from our reconstruction’because of ‘difficulties of interpretation’. Their result is a reconstruction with some features completely different from those seen in the fossils. The following reply will answer their criticism step by step.
