Recently, much has been learned about the immunology of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, a mechanistic understanding of currently employed immunomodulatory therapies has lagged behind, hindering both the search for more effective agents and clearer insight into the immunopathogenesis of MS. Christopher Karp and colleagues explore a unifying hypothesis for the mechanism of action of interferon beta in MS: suppression of interleukin 12 production.
