Although the physics of conden sation and precipitation have been studied by many able in vestigators there still remain a num ber of points of uncertainty. More complete and accurate measurements of the physical characteristics of the products of condensation and precipi tation are required before the several theories which have been proposed can be adequately examined. During the past eight years a research program on the transmission of light through fog, the local dissipation of fog and the determination of the physical properties of fog has been carried on at the Round Hill Research Station of the Massachusetts Institute of Tech nology1. One of the results of this work has been the development of new and more accurate methods for the measurement of the significant physi cal properties of fog and clouds. It is now planned to use this apparatus for the collection of data which it is hoped will serve to clarify our ideas concerning the underlying physical processes of condensation and preci pitation. It will probably be neces sary also to develop new apparatus for certain measurements and to study some of the important phenomena in the laboratory. It is believed that a review of the present state of our knowledge con cerning condensation and precipita tion will best serve to point out the problems which must be attacked. Although somewhat similar discus sions have been presented by Köhler2, Bergeron3, Bennett4, and Findeisen1, additional information is now availa ble which makes a new examination of the problem desirable at this time.
