Abstract. Known recurrence relations for the Nörlund numbers and the Bernoulli numbers of the second kind are generalized to infinite classes of recurrence relations. The Stirling numbers of the first kind occur in all these recurrences. Some of the relations are of arbitrary length and contain explicit formulas as special cases. A convolution formula for Stirling numbers of the first kind is also obtained.
