Describes the use of language switching in psychotherapy with a bilingual (primarily Spanish-speaking) patient. The subject was a 28-yr-old single woman diagnosed as suffering from neurotic depression with phobic symptoms in a hysteric personality. The therapist was primarily English-speaking with a basic conversational proficiency in Spanish, the dominant language of the patient. The 1st 2 mo of therapy were conducted entirely in Spanish, after which the therapist began switching to English at points of increased emotionality. This approach seemed to facilitate the patient's efforts to objectify emotionally charged issues.(6 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
