METHODOne hundred and eighty-three male and 199 female patients were interviewed in the ward before they were premedicated and within twenty-four hours of proposed surgery. After introductions, in which the author was presented as an anaesthetist, a present and past history was taken and the patient was examined. Particular attention was paid to elucidate past surgical and anaesthetic experience, details of which were recorded. The surgical and anaesthetic procedures to be experienced in the near future were explained. The patient, if he had not already voiced fears, was specifically asked if there were any worries. A clinical assessment of anxiety was then made.
