The larval somatic musculature ofDrosophilais arranged in a highly stereotyped pattern of 30 muscle fibers per hemisegment. Each muscle possesses a distinctive set of properties: size, shape, orientation, attachments to the epidermis and specific innervation. These qualities make each myofiber a unique element within the pattern. In this chapter we review what is known to date about how a muscle acquires its particular identity. We discuss the mechanisms that underlie the specification of muscle founder cells and fusion-competent myoblasts and how both types of myoblasts contribute to the final pattern of each larval muscle. While a body of evidence supports a crucial role for founder cells in conferring particular muscle identities, the function of fusion-competent myoblasts during muscle morphogenesis remains an open question for future investigation in the field.
