Population growth rate [of Drosophila serrata] is affected by both developmental time and net fecundity, and the relative importance of these 2 factors was investigated. Simple analytical expressions, derived for both discrete and continuous models, show that the increase in fecundity required to duplicate the effect of a unit shift in development is directly proportional to population growth rate and inversely proportional to survival rates. No assumptions about the form of the maternity or survivorship functions are required. While these results agree well with the widely held notion that r[intrinsic rate of increase]-selection favors fast development time, they generate the somewhat paradoxical prediction that K[carrying capacity]-selection should favor high reproductive output. The resolution of this problem probably involves constraints not included in most current analyses.
