This paper compares the efficacy of the different components of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) screening system in Japan, which consists of a combination of HBsAg, anti-HBc and minipool HBV-NAT (nucleic acid amplification technique) testing. The characteristics of HBV DNA-positive donors, and the natural course of acute HBV infection are described. The feasibility of further improvement of blood safety is discussed.
