this state of affairs grows out of a number of contradictions that can be linked to the simultaneous bureaucratization and professionalization of American academe. We trace these contradictions from the interorganizational level to the day-to-day realities of the classroom. These contradictions are highlighted in a general systems model which points out the need for a coordinated set of changes in both the bureaucratic and the professional spheres of universities. These changes will be most difficult to enact, but if institutionalized, they could lead to an academic revolution in the twenty-first century which consolidates and builds on the gains of America's first academic revolution.
