So much of the third edition of this very valuable reference book is superficially familiar that the amount of revision and updating from the second edition on initial inspection seems slight. The chapter sequence is the same, the chapter headings and even the sub-sections are virtually unchanged. An examination of the references, however, shows some 20% new material, and to have incorporated this into an existing format suggests a very thorough revision indeed. The new edition is, in fact, 45 pages shorter than its predecessor. Though many sections have, quite reasonably, been retained intact, much new information has been unobtrusively introduced. In a number of areas there have been significant changes of emphasis: the development of the oil palm in Latin America, the effect of tissue culture techniques and the treatment of mill effluent, for example, are given more prominence. Discussion of assisted pollination and bare root seedlings is negligible, though perhaps the former should have been given more space for historic reasons. The typeface of the new edition is much easier on the eye and the change to the Harvard system of citing literature simplifies the following up of references. The index is much more informative than in former editions. All-in-all a valuable edition to any library, even if the second edition is still there and in good condition.
