This paper considers the differing systems and variables used to distinguish city from city, and city from non‐city. A wide variety of approaches to urban description and classification are reviewed, ranging from those of the novelist and social critic to those of the sociologist, economist, geographer and social psychologist. A distinction is made concerning the measurement of community variables using objective and subjective data; and the contributions and problems of each in explaining interpersonal orientations and behavior is considered. In considering the relative usefulness of these two orientations, it is suggested that they are complementary rather than competing systems of description. Each may be relevant to differing kinds of behaviors and outcomes, and it is the interaction between these two forms of data that is likely to prove most useful in explaining the full range of urban behaviors.
