Assuming that the shape of red blood cells [human] is controlled by the curvature elasticity of the surrounding membrane, theoretical shapes were fit to the contours Evans determined by interference microscopy. Good agreement was obtained for disc shapes. The fit was not as good for less common shapes, which probably resulted from Evans'' parametric representation and from the interference of shear elasticity.
