The bloody suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing in June 1989 revealed a Communist Party leadership that was seriously out of touch with the wishes of its own society. It highlighted in tragic fashion the refusal of the old men who have ruled China on and off since 1949 to come to terms with the processes of change which their own programme of economic reform had set in motion. The massacre showed the bankruptcy of the political system after forty years of Party rule. China already faced a serious political, economic and social crisis which required greater flexibility on the part of the leadership if the Party was to ride out the storm.
