METHODSSubjects. A group of young men, students of the Facultv of Physical Education(I) tiho were not involved in system&c top training, was followed together with a group of old men with sedentary occupations subdivided in two subgroups according to lifelong physical activity (Table 1). Subgroup 11, consisted of men who were fairly phvsicallv active throughout life (at least 45 years) having part&pat& in different sports activities (7, 14, 17-19). Subgrouf7 II, included old men who had never engaged in any systematic sports activity, except at school and during military service. All old rnen felt healthy and were able to participate in our laboratory tests. Detailed clinical examination eliminated subjects with clearly abnormal findings. Men of subgroups &, c represented a small part of a greater group of old men followed longitudinally for 8-10 years (7, 17-19). Procedures. Body composition, ic, relative and absolute values of LBM, were ascertained by means of densitometry, ie, hydrostatic weighing with simultaneous measurement of the air in the lungs and respiratory passages by the nitrogen-dilution method (6, 15). In several old rnen body composition from skinfolds was calculated (17). The maximal oxygen uptake was investigated during a progressively increasing load on a bicycle ergometer. The maximal work load was chosen according to the method of Fischer et al.(9).Muscle biopsies were taken from the lateral part of the quadriceps muscle using the needle biopsy technique of Bergstr $ m (4). The tissue specimens were immcdiatcly im-mersed in 10% formalin. After a fixation period of 3-4 weeks or more, the PAS reaction as modified by Hecht (10) was used. The number of capillaries and muscle fibers was counted using a microscope with a vertical camera (Zeiss). Twenty fields from different sections were calculated from each specimen. The size of the field for all calculations was 40,000 p2. The capillaries and muscle fibers were calculated in cross sections. The capillary: fiber ratio and diffusion distance (D/Z) according to Krogh (13), which is the average distance between two capillaries, were also evaluated.
