18 non-pregnant female rats were injected with prolactin, with estrogen followed by prolactin, or with sterile water. The hormones were administered under conditions previously reported to produce maternal behavior. At the end of treatment, rats were tested for tendencies to retrieve foster young a few days old. Results show (1) that some nulliparous rats will retrieve foster young without special treatment and (2) that this tendency is not induced in other females by prolactin, estrogen, or progesterone as used in the present experiment.
