METHODSExperiments were conducted on awake rhesus monkeys that had been trained to fixate and track spots of light (for method, see Wurtz 1969). After training had been completed, each monkey was anesthetized with Halothane, and aseptic procedure was used to implant several devices. Bolts were secured to the skull and used to attach a platform that could be used as a mount for spectacles and to restrain the monkey's head (Miles and Eighmy 1980). A coil of wire was implanted in one eye to allow us to use the magnetic search coil method to monitor horizontal and vertical eye position (Judge et al. 1980).In a second surgery, the postauricular approach was used to implant a stimulating electrode in the perilymphatic space inside the lumen of the superior semicircular canal (Nelson 1982). A dental burr was used to dissect carefully through the mastoid air cells until the horizontal and superior canals could be visualized. A diamond burr was then used to gently sand the bony labyrinth of the superior canal until it was thin enough to make a tiny hole with a dissecting pin. The electrode was inserted into the hole and secured with Histacryl blue surgical adhesive and dental cement. We implanted the electrodes in the superior canal because they provided excellent electrical activation of afferents from the horizontal canal without compromising the mechanical activation of that canal by natural head turns in the horizontal plane (Bront6-Stewart and Lisberger 1990). Stimulating electrodes were implanted in the superior semicircular canals of three monkeys. In one additional monkey, the stimulating electrode was
