In Magnoliaceae grandiflora the flowers display a different pattern of fluorescence in ultraviolet light. The strobilus and papillose stigmas are deep red and the pollen fluoresces a bright yellow; however, the petals and strobilus/stigma secretions are not fluorescent. Flowers of M. macrophylla photographed using only ultraviolet light in sunlight with black and white film, show that only the spots at the base of the inner petals absorb ultraviolet light; in flowers of M. grandiflora the top of the strobilus strongly absorbs ultraviolet light. Species of Magnoliaceae display flowers with different patterns of ultraviolet light absorbance.
