Compared with normal infants of the same age, infants of diabetic mothers showed immature behaviour during sleep. The percentage of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep was significantly higher. During NON REM sleep, in certain cases respiration was more irregular and of higher frequency; even some eye movements were noted. No correlation between blood glucose levels and abnormal sleep cycles in newborn infants with maternal diabetes could be detected.
