“The study is still ongoing and we are working on validating these results in a larger cohort,” says lead author Pashtun Shahim. Though these findings represent a new avenue for objectively assessing concussions, the search for blood biomarkers in mild brain injuries continues.“It is possible that other parts of the brain besides cortical axons are also injured; thus, we may need a panel of biomarkers to fully diagnose concussion,” the authors conclude.
