The paper reviewed the studies on the genetics of wide-compatibility gene S-5~n at S-5 locus on chromosome 6, neutral alleles at sterility loci for imtigating inter-subspecific hybrid sterility, gametophyte genes and their neutral alleles for mitigating gamete abortion or selective fertilization of male gametes in the distant crosses of rice. The author also disussed the utilization of these neutral alleles in hybrid rice breeding.
