The electrochemical reduction of metal oxides is important in the production of refractory metals. Conventional electroreduction routes have limitations related to oxide build-up near the surface of solid precursors, as well as operative electrolyte access to the inner parts of the precursors. The fluidised cathode process offers a promising substitute. The process is demonstrated on a WO3 and LiCl-KCl model system. Cyclicvoltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to investigate the process. Process conditions such as fluidisation rate and concentration of particles in the melt, and their effects, are investigated.
