The modern transportation industry develops innovative vehicle design to fulfill increasing economic and performance demands. Therefore more and more sandwich components are being used which require new joining technologies. The application of elastic adhesives has been proven to be a suitable joining technique for large-scale components such as sandwich panels. Hybrid structures, eg, the Transrapid Maglev train for Shanghai, state-of-the-art low-floor tramway body shells, and ship superstructures, have been designed to fulfill stringent structural criteria. This paper presents several case studies of elastic bonding in mass transportation applications, and discusses the design features, assembly, and testing. Sandwich panels are designed to provide a suitable zone for the bonding layer as well as for load transfer. Edge stiffeners are carefully prepared to enable a smooth load transfer into the sandwich shell. Furthermore, design limits are outlined for the adhesive layer. The structural analysis based on finite element methods is discussed, and test results have been used to verify the design criteria.
