Italy's economic performance between 1895 and 1947 is assessed in a general theoretical framework for productivity growth measurement, which enables the authors to relax the binding assumptions of traditional studies. The paper shows that 'true productivity' growth is of minor importance, being largely outweighed by economies of scale as a source of growth. Productivity growth appears to be larger when the economic environment is more competitive, in 1905-25. Conversely, a productivity gap shows up in the years characterized by domestic restrictive practices and by the absence of international competition.This seems to be the case particularly for the Fascist period.
