This publication brings together, in one volume, seven reports completed under a grant entitled," Integration and Testing: Experimental Interview Techniques," and provides a bridge between experiments and regular content health surveys. Material in this report is an integration of current theory and empirical findings in survey research techniques. Research has raised new questions or has shown inconsistencies with earlier findings and assumptions. Through experimentation, the concept of the interview has been clarified and broadened. The research presented includes experiments with variations in interview behavior and question wording that have not been previously undertaken. In the course of these experiments, the survey interview and the sources of bias have been presented in terms somewhat different from the traditional view.
