This volume contains five stories written in different styles by people who contributed greatly to our understanding of parts of bioenergetics. I use the word stories advisedly since the editor asked for personal uninhibited recollections and not just for a history of achievement. What has emerged is a curious mixture. Hartree chooses to write about cytochromes and Kellin-'a man who thinks of his subject and not his ego'. Straub writes touchingly of his early work on actin in Hungary and Boyer writes generously of his involvement in phosphate reactions and the successes and trials of his work. The two Rackers relive their frequently exciting energetic lives pursuing energy usage through resolution and reconstruction of biological organisation. This is one half of the book. I would have preferred more story and less republished reprints (75%). The other half of the book (70% reprints) is written by Peter Mitchell, who traces in a very different, highly personal, manner a'history'of the involvement of the proton in bioenergetics. Now this history involved events in which I was involved and frequently my name appears. It is unfortunate that I was not able to place my own tale beside this one for I do not recoghise'my'views or the'history'of critical periods in which I was involved some twenty years ago. History it is not. Why not tell of the exchanges in the critical year around 1961? Has Mitchell dealt similarly with others? Autobiography has its problems.'Auto'can blow his trumpet and knock down imagined enemies by the score. Alternatively'Auto'can reflect at ease and see as fairly as he can, yet as passionately as he wishes, the battles of the past. Autobiography tells not about achievement, which is already known, but about character. Beware autobiography it shows yourself.
