This chapter provides excerpts from Binet and Simon's book The Development of Intelligence in Children (see record 2006-07623-000), translated by Elizabeth S. Kite. Without question one of the" giants" of this period was Alfred Binet. Probably no psychological innovation has had more impact on the societies of the Western world than the development of the Binet-Simon scales. In place of Spearman's zeal for methodology, Binet had a driving concern for validity and a consistent orientation toward his problem--the measurement of intelligence. Over the course of many years Binet had tried and discarded a host of techniques, including even phrenology and palmistry, in his never-flagging efforts to develop measures which could meet the needs of the clinic and the school. The editors have tried to select excerpts which show something of the background from which the tests arose, the materials in the tests, and the development of the scale of intelligence.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
