After a decade or so in which there was rellively little progress, a considerable expansion of information bearing on human toxoplasmosis occurred. Simplified serologic tests were introduced, basic epidemiologic data emerged which had previously eluded investigators and which suggested for the first time a logical source of human infection, the life cycle of the organism became clear and finally, and perhaps most importantly, the problem of asymptomatic infection during the newborn period was defined, along with its frequent and disasterous sequela of mental retardation.
