Reviews literature supporting the theory that stress-induced neurological damage underlies symptoms of% PTSD%. Animal studies have shown that stress can lead to hippocampal damage, and human PTSD studies have suggested that stress and PTSD development are associated with hippocampal atrophy and associated memory deficits. Evidence suggests that effects are PTSD-specific, and not the result of nonspecific stress exposure effects or other confounding factors such as alcohol or drug abuse. Stress-induced glucocorticoid release and other factors may be involved.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
