Ingredients of the experimental conflict: 1) The nurse would be asked to give an obviously excessive dose of medicine. For reasons of safety it was decided to use a placebo. 2) The medication order was to be transmitted by telephone, a procedure in violation of hospital policy. 3) The medication would be “unauthorized," ie, a drug which had not been placed on the ward stock-list and cleared for use. 4) The order would be given to the nurse by an unfamil-iar voice.Overall approach: The conflict situation was contrived at a public and a private hospital on 12 and ten wards, respectively. A questionnaire was administered to a group of nurses at a third hospital as a matched control. The control subjects were asked what they would do if confronted with the circumstances of the experimental conflict. A group of student nurses was also given the questionnaire, in order to see how less experienced nurses thought they would react.
