The discovery and characterization of oncogenes has become one of the most promising avenues in cancer research and the rapidly accumulating work on cellular and viral oncogenes has been exhaustively reviewed (1-4). In this article, we will be concerned with five of the almost 20 known oncogenes, namely src, ras, mye, abl, and mos. First, we briefly describe the properties of these oncogenes, what is known about their association with carcinogenesis, and their possible role in normal development. We then focus on the expression of these cellular oncogenes during liver regeneration and hepatocarcinogenesis. Although much of the work is still to be done, we speculate on the possible biological significance of these observations and attempt to indicate directions for future work.
