A fasting patient not given alcohol had more ethanol in blood from the portal vein than in blood from the cubital vein. Values for portal blood were much greater, up to 0.073 mM, when the patient was eating normally. This suggests that microbial fermentation in the intestinal tract may be important. Ethanol was also identified in portal blood from normal rats and preliminary results (to be published) showed that it was much less in germ-free rats.-A. H.
