In powder technology the size characterization problems range from determining the shape of rock fragments measuring several centimeters to the problems of characterizing the shape and structure of items such as diesel soot and industrially important pigments. In the first section of this chapter we look at the techniques for characterizing the shape and size of rock fragments that are large enough for measurements to be made directly on the items of interest. In a later section we discuss how computer-aided image analysis is being used to look at two-dimensional images of very small fineparticles. As the sophistication of computer-aided image analysis increases and the cost of processing falls many of the techniques currently limited to two-dimensional characterization will be extended to three dimensions. In the third section we look at how dynamic behavior is being used to characterize the shape of tumbling fineparticles.
