Edward E. Po chin National Radiological Protection Board Chilton, Didcot Oxfordshire OXII ORQ England Estimates have been obtained, by epidemiological investigations in man, of the frequency with which different forms of cancer may be induced by radiation exposure of the body or of the individual body organs. The risk estimates which have been obtained for over 20 organs are particularly important, since some organs may be selectively irradiated by the concentration of certain radionuclides in them. The estimates depend upon the comparison of cancer incidence or mortality between groups of people or populations which have or have not been exposed to increased radiation, and in which the frequency of cancer is recorded comprehensively for long periods of time following the exposures. The source of these estimates, and the need for exact comparisons between the irradiated and unirradiated populations, are reviewed.
