Views humor as a consequence of incongruous relationships being established among elements in an episode. A joke involves an incongruously resolved violation of explicit codes. Bipolar oppositions are used to characterize various approaches to humor under the general heading of incongruities, and 45 different techniques for creating humor are grouped into verbal, ideational, existential, and physical categories. An example is analyzed which illustrates the incongruous relationship theory and shows that a joke may involve a number of different techniques and categories of humor.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
