The Southern California Air Quality Study (SCAQS) was conducted in the South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB) during the summer and fall of 1987 to provide a comprehensive data base for analysis and modeling of ozone and particulate matter. A detailed analysis of the SCAQS three-dimensional (3-D) air quality and meteorological data was undertaken to develop an improved understanding of aloft pollutant concentration, and of pollutant formation and transport processes in the SoCAB. The objectives of the analysis were: to determine the spatial and temporal characteristics of 3-D pollutant concentrations and carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur species distributions during the study; to show how knowledge of specific features of the 3-D and species distributions improves the understanding of the formation and transport processes which influence ozone and particulate matter concentrations in the SoCAB; and to relate how the SCAQS 3-D and species distribution data might be used best for model inputs (initial and boundary conditions), to provide insights into improving model representations of what is occurring in the atmosphere, and to improve model performance evaluations.
