The stress concentration of pitting area under tension torsion loading conditions has been numerically studied by using fi nite element software Abaqus. The stress concentration factors of pits under regular evolution and irregular evolution have been investigated by conducting a series of three-dimensional semi-elliptical pitted models. Based on the fi nite element analysis, it is concluded that pit aspect ratio(a/2c) is a signif icant parameter affecting stress concentration factor(SCF). Pits, having higher aspect ratio, are very dangerous and may cause signifi cant reduction in the load carrying capacity. When local dissolution occurs in the pitting area, SCF will have a sharp increase, it is more probable for a crack to initiated from these areas compared with pits under regular evolution
