The pH was obtained with a glass electrode and the records with the simultaneous electrocorticogram were made optically. Hyperventilation or the injection of sodium bicarbonate resulted in an" alkaline" reaction of the cortex of the curarized macaque. Hypoventilation or injection of dilute acid gave the opposite reaction. Increased pH gave increased excitability and accounted for the observed changes in electrical activity of the cortex. After-discharge results in decreased pH at the site of the after-discharge, whether induced by direct electrical stimulation or neurally by a disturbance propagated from a distance.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
