The degree of atherosclerosis of Japanese arterial tree was evaluated not only by atherosclerotic index based on a macroscopial grading system, but also by chemical analyses of acid mucopoly saccharide (AMPS) and lipids. The contents of cholesterol as well as atherosclerotic index of aorta, coronary and cerebral artery of Japanese were significantly lower than those of Americans, except for the total cholesterol of cerebral artery. The contents of hexosamine, uronic acid and sulfur in cerebral artery are significantly lower than those in other arteries. Only in cerebral arteries, the contents of hexosamine increased with an advancement of atherosclerosis, an increase of arterial blood pressure levels and of the contents of total cholesterol, but not in other arteries except that hexosamine contents of renal artery increased with an increase of systolic blood pressure. In cerebral artery, the content of hyaluronic acid is negligible and that of chondroitin sulfate A and/or C is relatively lower than that in aorta and coronary artery.
