An improved intravenous membrane probe, using hollow fiber silicon tubing, is used for in vivo mass spectrometric blood analysis. Detection limits in blood (in vitro) are 1 ppm or less for dichloromethane, methoxyflurane, and styrene. Response times are several minutes. Inhalation of dichloromethane or methoxyflurane by a rat is detected by monitoring the compound in the blood. The concentration of dichloromethane was monitored in vivo and found to fall exponentially (k = -0.15 min-1).
