Breast cancer is the most frequent malignancy among women in Western countries, with an incidence rate in the US of 111 cases per 100,000 woman-years (wy) and a mortality rate of 24 deaths per 100,000 wy (Howe et al., 2001). There are an estimated 1 million new cases per year in the world, with up to 5-fold lower incidence in Eastern Asia than in Western countries, a variation probably related to environmental rather than genetic factors (Probst-Hensch et al., 2000).
