Based on carefully conducted and extensive fieldwork, it successfully marries contextual analysis with insightful observation and well-chosen, illustrative field notes. In addition, the book is superbly written and concise, avoiding the overtheorizing and excessive contemplation of many recent ethnographies of Brazil. In sum, it is a must-read for anyone interested in democratic consolidation, public security, organized crime, or Latin American politics in general.
