This paper investigates the relationship between the size of the 1inear trend test in proportions Cochran, 1954; Armitage, 1955 and the design of the chronic animal bioassays used as cancer screens. The results indicate that an improper design choice can cause the true size of the test to deviate from its nominal value. These results extend to modifications of the test, including versions which correct for differential survival and continuity.
