Background: MacArthur and Wilson's theory of island biogeography has been a foun-dation for obtaining testable predictions from models of community assembly and for developing models that integrate across scales and disciplines. Historically, however, ike systems. We highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these existing models, in terms of integrating across organizational levels and predicting realistic multidimensional community data including a genetic component. Finally, we discuss ongoing and potential future efforts to unify models operating at different organizational levels, in order to predict multidimensional community- scale data better.
