As someone with a background in computing science, information security, information management and digital preservation, but no background or knowledge of the Social Sciences, I am acutely conscious that I am not representative of a key audience for this book. Also, most of my experience is in the operational and practical challenges of dealing with information in the Civil Service rather than an academic research environment. So it is with some nervousness that I have approached this review. In many of the presentations and books on information and/or records management, there is an unfortunate tendency for authors to adopt a tone reminiscent of the iconic stern librarian, who with a single disapproving glance over horn rimmed glasses can demand obedience to the ‘rules’. Many also indulge in intellectual justification of tasks that ‘Should’or ‘Must’be done to ensure that information or records survive in a useful form, but rarely use the terms of the users they are addressing, instead they use the terms and values of the information managers themselves. Unfortunately, for the reader of such entreaties, the prescribed activities often appear to get in the way of the task at hand, whether this task is the administration of a public authority or research in the Social Sciences.
