It was found that the adhesions of a fibroblast to a glass substratum, which can be identified with an interference reflection microscope, usually persist in the neighbourhood of a contact with another fibroblast during the process of contact inhibition. The retraction observed in this region during contact inhibition is not therefore due to loss of adhesion to the substratum.
