1. Introduction. In this paper I examine the history, the methodological principles, and the theoretical status of position class analysis of the Athapaskan verb complex. I claim that there are problems of both methodology and terminology within our field, that the linear order of affix positions in the verb complex has generally been underdifferentiated, and that the concept of a zone of adjacent affixes, as opposed to a specific affix position, is essential for descriptive and theoretical work. In 2 I summarize some of the problems and contradictions in the literature on position class analysis. In 2.1 I survey the various analyses of the Navajo verb complex, and then in 2.2 I present a chronology of analyses in eighteen Athapaskan languages of what I call the prefixes of the qualifier zone. In 3 I present some ground rules for making position class analysis of the Athapaskan verb complex more systematic and congruent. In 4.1 I demonstrate these principles with my analysis of the Ahtna verb complex, which has a linear sequence of twenty-seven prefix positions before the verb stem and three suffix positions after the stem; in 4.2 I present a preliminary reanalysis of the Navajo verb complex using the same methodology; finally, in 4.3 I make a few remarks about comparative research on the Athapaskan verb complex.
